“COMMUNITY at The Martin Building+Flats”
Bankers Hill // San Diego, California
Under the Sanctuary143 project, we produced CONSPIRE, a one-night art event that took place within six of twenty rooms at the newly renovated Community apartment building in Bankers Hill. Before residents moved into the rooms, we staged a creative takeover, pairing a musician with an artist in each room. The results of this interdisciplinary collaboration manifested themselves the night of 1/17/09, with paintings, original soundtracks, acoustic music performances, and sculptural installations unveiled to hundreds of house-guests.
The tin can phone was our representation of this interdisciplinary exchange of ideas through the diverse forms of music and art. As artist Keikichi Honna says: “It needs a partner, which has plenty of incidents of miscommunication and misunderstanding, and it needs to keep tension between us for our voices to be heard.”
